6 Tips for a Less Wasteful and More Sustainable Halloween

With plastic decorations, throw away costumes and candy wrappers galore, Halloween can be down right scary for our planet. But it doesn't need to be that way! We can at least make steps to cut down our waste! Here are 6 tips to help you do just that!

Host a costume swap or buy second hand! Old costumes can be used time and time again! Visit your local thrift stores, check out local online markets or exchange costumes with other friends and family.

Make your own costume!  Use what you've got at home! I don't think I've ever bought a Halloween costume. I always just raid my parents closet. There are some scary items in there ;)

Skip store bought decorations. Instead try:

  • Decorating with Items from your Recycle Bin. Some ideas:

    • Poke holes in aluminum cans, painting them, and placing lights or candles inside

    • Paint jugs orange and use them as Jack-o-Lanterns

    • Paper Mache spiders and creatures

    • Make shapes out of cardboard and paint them in festive colours

  • Get some help from Mother Nature: Scavenge for branches, use things like moss or leaves, you could even paint rocks!

Purchase your pumpkin from a local supplier. After Halloween you can use your pumpkin for baking, roast the seeds and compost the rest!

Create your own Goody Bags! If you’re hosting a Halloween party for the kiddos, create your own goody bags with bulk candy and/or non-plastic items such as colouring pencils, funky socks etc.  Ditch the plastic treat bags and use paper or cloth treat bags instead! I love these Burlap Goodie Bags or this smaller pack. I also like these paper treat bags!

Bake Halloween Cookies. If you're hosting a halloween party, skip the candy and make some spooky halloween cookies instead! Use halloween inspired cookie cutters to create lots of fun shapes!
